WET AND WINDY WEATHER
The rain has come at last, steady and soaking, not a short sharp shower that runs away this time. I had a brief trip to Wellington via Auckland over last weekend and the countryside through the Waikato was very dry with a tinge of green, the poorer country white spotted all over with mushrooms. My wife who is a fearful flier fortified with suitable relaxants was grateful our plane circled easily through the wispy cloud over the Manukau and headed south.
The central North Island seems almost arid from 9000 meters up. Wellington promised blustery winds and stormy skies, what's new you say? In the end we landed into a steady cold southerly. Shorts and a tee shirt no protection while waiting on the platform partially sheltered from the scathing wind. Saturday though dawned fine, cold and still, a near perfect capital day. The harbor a postcard surrounded by bush covered hills glinting with buildings. Sunday brought low cloud from the north and a blustery northerly. The A320 took off over the Hutt Valley heading north; high cloud surrounded us without softening the turbulence all the way into Auckland, 50 mins later. A steady drowning rain greeted us on landing then faced us into glaring headlights for 3 hrs all the way back to Tauranga.
We live in a country of changeable weather dominated by a weather pattern funneled between our big, hot occasionally overbearing neighbor and a freezer with its door open sourced well to the south.
It's as well then to be prepared with our animals. The basics are as for us food, clothing and shelter.
Energy requirements fluctuate through alterations in basal metabolic rate, the energy required for maintenance so no harm if you give a little more when it's miserable outside or perhaps cut back when it's a bit hotter. If you are worried about food requirements monitoring weight is a great way to keep your pet on track. Feel free to call in any time to do this. Our scales are free.
In the summer heat you might consider a short back and sides but for now we have a great range of coats to keep the heat in and the weather out.
Finally when its time to go to bed we all need a comfy one. We have a good range in our clinics.
Stay warm and dry from Barkes Corner Vet Hospital and Brookfield Vet Centre.
